A tender pair of vintage East African busts, most likely carved in Kenya, capturing the quiet strength and poise of an African couple. Their softly modelled faces, elongated necks and serene upward gaze give them a sense of stillness, as though looking out across an endless horizon, or simply toward one another.
Carved from mottled brown Kisii stone in the late 1970s or early 1980s, these small sculptures belong to the tradition of Kenyan workshop carving made for travellers passing through Nairobi and the safari routes. At just 9 cm high, they rest beautifully in the hand, their smooth, rounded forms inviting touch.
The underside of the woman’s bust carries the inscription Tavenswa Makopa, likely a personal name, perhaps the signature of the carver, we cannot be sure.
Good vintage condition; some small marks consistent with age, but the carved facial features are intact and expressive.
