This charming pair of Mary Gregory‑inspired cobalt‑blue glass vases blends Victorian nostalgia with Art Nouveau elegance.
Mary Gregory (1856–1940) was an American glass decorator who worked for the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company in Massachusetts during the late nineteenth century. Her specialty was white enamel painting on coloured glass, often depicting children in Victorian dress playing with hoops, nets, or baskets.
Emulating her popular style, turn‑of‑the‑century Bohemian factories (in what is now the Czech Republic) began producing similar enamelled glass for export to Britain and America, and Mary Gregory became a byword for this prettily painted style.
Each vase is embellished with rigoree beading , a technique in which molten glass is applied to the surface to create decorative, tactile trails. The graceful child figures are hand‑painted in white enamel mixed with ground glass, then gently fired so the paint fuses to the surface without sinking into it. The raised texture can be felt with the fingertip, a mark of true craftsmanship.
