A native of India or Nepal, this lovely elephant was beautifully cast in heavy copper and finished with a warm brass lacquer. Likely made in the mid‑twentieth century, he has that chunky, artisanal style so typical of hand‑worked Asian metalware of the period.
Created using a two‑part lost‑wax casting technique, the figure was cast in separate halves and then joined at the centre, a hallmark of traditional, small‑workshop craftsmanship. After casting, the maker added delicate surface marks to suggest the folds of the pachyderm’s skin, and the ears were finely engraved with chisels, giving them texture and life.
With his appealing curvy body, his comforting weight, and his trunk at rest , a posture symbolising calm, strength, and grounded energy in nature, mythology, and popular culture, this gentle giant invites touch. You can see he has been handled often: in places, the brass finish has softened, allowing the copper beneath to show through. This natural patina only enhances his weathered charm.
Whether sitting on a mid‑century shelf, peeking among plants in a yoga corner, or resting on a pile of papers on your desk, this elephant brings a peaceful, steady presence to any home.
