The Arts & Crafts movement championed the belief that everyday objects should be made with honesty, skill, and beauty. Makers of the period rejected mass‑production in favour of visible joinery, hand‑cut ornament, and straightforward, purposeful forms. Their work drew deeply on medieval craftsmanship, reviving techniques, motifs, and proportions that celebrated the maker’s hand.
During the Edwardian era, Liberty & Co. became one of the movement’s most influential retailers. Their celebrated Sedley bookcases, with exposed pegs and the distinctive trefoil‑and‑arch motif, embodied the movement philosophy and principles. Arthur is created in that same spirit: simple, well‑proportioned, and enriched with meaningful detail.
Craftsmanship & Timber
Arthur is crafted in beautifully figured tulip wood, a timber chosen for its fine grain, density, and expressive natural colouration. Tulip wood is wonderfully characterful: its tones can range from mellow yellow‑brown to deeper browns, greenish, even burgundy streaks, and occasional dramatic figuring.
Because this timber varies so much in hue and pattern, each Arthur bookcase will be entirely unique. Some pieces will be lighter and more uniform; others will display bold streaks or richer colour shifts. This individuality is part of the charm of tulip wood and a hallmark of handcrafted furniture — no two bookcases will ever be identical, and your piece will have its own natural personality.

Finishes
We offer two standard finishes: natural and oiled & waxed. Tulip wood has such inherent warmth and interest that we love it just as it is, but if you would prefer Arthur stained or painted to suit your décor, we are happy to discuss a bespoke finish.
Postage & Delivery
We will dispatch your bookcase within two to three working days of purchase. It will be carefully wrapped and entrusted to a reliable courier to ensure it arrives in perfect condition.
